Understand what your skincare ingredients actually do, how they work, what the evidence supports — and where that evidence is thinner than the marketing suggests.
An ingredient name alone doesn't tell you whether a product will work
Two products can list "niacinamide" and behave completely differently on skin. What actually determines whether an ingredient does anything useful is a combination of factors that never show up on the front of the bottle.
This page exists to make that reasoning visible. For every ingredient below, we've tried to separate what's well established from what's still emerging.
Concentration
Too low and it does little; too high and irritation risk can rise without added benefit.
Formulation & pH
Some actives only work within a narrow pH window — get it wrong and the ingredient can't do its job.
Stability
Some actives degrade in light, air, or heat — a discoloured product may no longer work as tested.
Delivery
Molecular size and vehicle affect whether an ingredient reaches where it needs to act.
Evidence
The quality and volume of research behind an ingredient varies enormously — we grade it honestly below.

What to expect, and when
Skin cell turnover is roughly 28 days in adults — meaningful visible change from most well-formulated actives typically takes at least one full cycle.
Adjustment
Skin acclimatises to new actives. Mild dryness or tingling is common. Hydration is the first improvement.
First signals
Texture starts to smooth. Congestion clears as turnover normalises.
Visible change
Pigmentation begins to fade. Fine lines and pore appearance improve.
Structural results
Collagen-supporting actives show measurable firmness and tone improvements. Consistency is the multiplier.

Considerations for Indian Skin
Many people with deeper Fitzpatrick skin types (III–VI) have melanocytes that react more readily to inflammation, which is why post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and melasma come up so often. Combined with India's high year-round UV index, daily broad-spectrum sunscreen matters here more than almost any single active.
Mandelic acid is generally preferred over glycolic acid for deeper skin tones. Alpha arbutin, niacinamide, azelaic acid, and tranexamic acid are commonly reached for pigmentation concerns.
